Winter Stations International Design Competition

G2.

Winter Stations is an international design competition focused on transforming the Toronto beach front into an open design exhibit for the winter months. I was a part of the Humber team and we were challenged to create an installation that related to the theme of migration.

The combined knowledge of students from industrial design, interior design, and architecture technology was used to create an installation that brought people together, people that come from all over the world. The goal was to create a piece that sparked curiosity and conversation between people that otherwise would never have met.

We chose to use pink acrylic with a reflective finish to create small podiums for people gather around. The pink provides a strong contrast with the snow and catches the eyes of passersby.

The use of a coloured, reflective material conveys a message of equality. As people stand over the reflective surface, everybody’s faces, regardless of ones heritage, is reflected in hot pink. No matter where someone has migrated from, in Toronto everyone is equal and welcome.
